Big Country Chapter #471, Inc.
President
=s MessageIt seems like only last month that I was writing my first message telling of upcoming chapter events for the year. Now I am faced with the same task, only this year it is much easier. As always, the second Saturday breakfast will be the core for activities. After conferring with several members, who have graciously volunteered their expertise and service, we will have another full calendar.
This year we are adding an aviation movie series. Several times throughout the year there will be an aviation-related movie for anyone who wishes to watch with chapter 471 friends.
This past year's flyouts produced a great amount of fun. There were always extra seats and they need to be filled! If you do not have a plane or just would rather ride, secure a seat with someone
Cyou are needed to complete our chapter's fun. This year the Chapter 471 Poker Run is being revived. This will be offered to surrounding EAA chapters with attractive prizes for the winner. As part of the Southwest regional fly-in, Felix and Barry have put on an air rally. This is always a fun event, and many find it difficult to participate due to duties that have to be performed for the fly-in. This way we all have the opportunity to participate and get some practice for the fly-in. (Possible unfair advantage, oh well!!)
For the Young Eagle's event in May, static displays will be in the works to spark aviation enthusiasts and draw the crowd to the airport.
So here's a summary of what is coming in 2001:
January

These two have not only been recognized by our chapter as tireless
workers, but by nationals and were rewarded with a really nice EAA shirt
at our Christmas party. When you see them, make sure to congratulate them.
Speaking of the Treasurer
(continued from last month)
We realized that our November election of officers did not include the office of Treasurer. To correct this error, we held the election for the position of Treasurer on December 9th after our monthly breakfast. Hobby Stevens, our current treasurer, and Audie Gill were nominated. Hobby Stevens was elected (with even Audie voting for him).

RULES OF THE AIR
1. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory.
2. If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again.
3. Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous.
4. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there than up there wishing you were down here.
5. The ONLY time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
6. The propeller is just a big fan in front of the plane used to keep the pilot cool. When it stops, you can actually watch the
pilot start sweating.
7. When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No one has ever collided with the sky.
8. A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away. A 'great' landing is one after which they can use the plane again.
9. You know you've landed with the wheels up if it takes full power to taxi to the ramp.
10. Learn from the mistakes of others. You won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.
