XPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION JULY 2001BIG COUNTRY CHAPTER # 471, INC.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
-Gray Bridwell
Being the president of chapter 471 is an honor in many ways. I get to work with many fine members who have individual ideas to make the chapter grow and develop into a great atmosphere for all. Various areas being cultivated are: Young Eagles, membership drive, hanger projects, Fly-outs, 2nd Saturday breakfast, various membership social gatherings during the year, and SWRFI. We are lucky to have some dedicated people and good cooks driving the events that make our chapter successful!!! When you really think about it, it takes us all working together to make it happen. THANKS!Our Young Eagles day in Snyder was a success, many 471 members participated and made the day fun for all. The crowd turnout from Snyder was great and the newspaper and radio advertising paid off! Fuel prices were lowered to $1.40 for our members in appreciation for a job well done. After flying in Abilene at our Young Eagles day, with our wonderful controllers guiding us around the city, they were certainly missed at the uncontrolled Winston Field! The morning was very busy to say the least.
This year at SWRFI, chapters have been requested to serve in specific areas rather than all chapters mixing and working together to get the job done.
This will give some accountability and ease the workload on some chapters. Since our chapter is one of the ones that have more than its fair share of the workload, I am glad to see this change. This year chapter 471 will be putting up tents and taking them down. Not a hard task, since we have done it every year anyway, plus a lot more!
The chapter voted last month to bid our "T" hangers now rather than wait until 2003. This will make our new club hangars lease in conjunction with our "T" hangars. One is no good without the other! A study was done to determine the sewer location, and this has determined our building location for us. We will request to the city that the location be where the EAA tie down area is, just East of TSTCs north storage yard. TSTC is working on an easement agreement for water and sewer to run across their storage yard. We also voted to move the meeting to the 2nd Saturday breakfast. This way you can eat meat, or eat and meet. This will allow us to schedule some "hands on" building/maintenance programs.
We watched "Chapter Views Volume 5", produced by EAA nationals in the last meeting. This video shows me that our chapter is working in the direction to make the chapter thrive. Nationals stress Food, Fun, Flying, and Family. These are ways to keep all members involved. If you think back, we have focused on all of these.
LISA MARCELLUS WINS AWARD
Lisa is a two-time award winner! She was named CFI of the Year for the Lubbock FSDO. With that win, her nomination went to the regional competition. The Southwest Region in-cludes Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Lisa was named CFI of the Southwest Region!!Winning the Regional title moved her name to the national competition. At news time, no official standings were available for the national title.
Lisa told Hangar Flyin' that she thought that the safety articles which she has shared with our club were the deciding factor in her being named CFI of the Year at the regional level.
Our congratulations go out to Lisa Marcellus CFI of the Year!

JUNE ACTIVTIES JUMPSTART SUMMER
Billy Tucker
EAA 471 members had a busy June. On June 9th, we hosted our annual FAA Appreciation Party. This was well attended and the food was fantastic! On June 16th, our club participated in a Young Eagle's flight in Snyder. That same day, our friends (and members) at the Big Country Chapter of the Confed-erate Airforce had a fly-in and static display at Elmdale. AND then, some of our members went to Judge Lane's annual fly-in and cookout.
It is not possible to mention each one of your names in relation to what you do to make these special events happen. (They don't JUST happen do they?) Often, we don't even know who did what, but we do know that we appreciate each one of you and your faithful contribution to the effectiveness of Chapter 471. Thank you each one of you for your hard work!!
The following letter was sent by 471 member Wes Hays to the Lubbock chapter concerning their work at the Snyder Young Eagles event.
EAA Chapter 19
Lubbock, TX
I just had to write your chapter a note of gratitude for the members of your chapter that helped us with the Young Eagle flight in Snyder last Saturday, June 16. Our Abilene Chapter 471 had scheduled the Young Eagles flight at Snyder but unfortunately only three of our planes were able to make it. The others were down for maintenance or had already made other plans. We had three RV's and one Cherokee. Thanks to Chapter 471 members Carroll Bird, Gray Bridwell, Hobby Stephens, Lon Beasley, Bobby Nichols, Jim West, and Tim McMurray for their efforts in making the YE flight a success.
However, there were 52 Young Eagles anxiously awaiting to be flown, and without the help and assistance of the following members of Lubbock Chapter 19, the YE flight would have been very disappointing for a lot of the kids who showed up. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate them and I hope you will also give them a hearty Well Done.
Terry Cole, Jeff Church, Judy Stocks, John Rotgotski, and Stan Blanton flew numerous YE's while Joel Spray helped get the folks lined up and organized. All in all it was a huge success, but it just wouldn't have happened without the assistance from your folks from Chapter 19.
You guys and gals are great and we appreciate you very much.
Warmest regards,
Wes Hays

Membership Chairperson Needed
In the past "Chapter Views" volume 5 video, it was suggested that a single person oversee chapter membership. This will provide one person to be in charge of new members, retaining members, and recruiting new members. Please call Felix Thomas at 672-3623 if you are interested in the position.SWRFI WORK DAY THIS SATURDAY
(July 14) Tim McMurrayT
he Southwest Regional Fly-in needs your help after the breakfast on Saturday July 14th. SWRFI is having a work day at the airport to accomplishsome maintenance items prior to the fly-in. The following is a partial list of things that we will try to accomplish:
1) Install a new roof on the portable control tower.
2) Paint the portable control tower.
3) Clean out and reorganize the storage area.
4) Install new locking mechanisms on storage area doors.
5) Clean out and reorganize the office spaces.
6) Mesquite control (spraying ) on the ultralite runway and other areas.
We expect to have SWRFI members from all over flying and driving in to help with this effort. If we all pitch in, we hope to have the majority of this work by early afternoon before it gets too hot!!
So come and join in the fun and help make our fly-in "The Best In The Southwest."
Thanks,
Tim McMurray
