XPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION May 2003BIG COUNTRY CHAPTER # 471, INC.
Message from the President
-
Gray BridwellAs I sit and think of things that the chapter will benefit from doing or enjoy doing, I reflect quite often to what has been done in the past to answer the question of what the future holds for our chapter. However the upcoming months will not be like the past, and we will move to new altitudes. In short, the breakfast will keep growing.
At the last breakfast we had visitors from Altus Oklahoma, Pecan Plantation, and Granbury. Our dishes and silverware worked out great. More great breakfast items are coming in the months to come.
A group of 471 members are traveling to SWRFI to drive tractors and talk to folks about our upcoming fly-in. This will be a great time to market our great event and see folks that we have not seen in some time. Please make plans to go to SWRFI and help us out. We need the help from our chapter.
The mass flight to Oshkosh by our chapter to celebrate 100 years of powered flight will be attended by a large group of chapter 471 members. We leave on Monday and return on Friday. The trial run will be June 7th for all who are pilots or passengers.
Young Eagles will be June 14th. More information from Chris Ulibarri follow in this newsletter.
And don't forget the chapter fly-in. This will be the event for 2003 that will raise a considerable amount of money for our chapter and have a lot of fun doing it. Your support is needed. Your ideas are needed. Your presence is needed.
Chapter elections will be in October. We will be electing a new president, and vice president so be thinking of the persons who will step up and make the chapter better than it is.
Oshkosh on the Brazos
Will be on June 7th the weekend before Young Eagles. If you are going to Oshkosh as a pilot or passenger, load your camping gear and come try it out. You can fly-in if you desire. 2500'
17/35 or 2500' 09/27 or combine the two and call it 5000'.......

EAA Chapter 471
Chris Ulibarri – Young Eagles Chairman
I have compiled a complete record of Young Eagles flown as of April 5th 2003 for our EAA Chapter 471. My sources are the EAA Young Eagles homepage at http://www.youngeagles.org and the EAA Young Eagles Newsletter I received on February 7th 2003. These are fantastic numbers going back to the inception of the Young Eagles program in 1992 and before my time as a Young Eagles Pilot. These flights have been done at your own expense in time and dollars in the true spirit of giving something back to the youth. What you have given is the thrill of their lifetime in the form of a free airplane ride. Through the years you have introduced the thrill and excitement of flying to 5,727 Young Eagles. I am very proud of you all and the spectacular progress we have accomplished together over the years and what we will continue to accomplish in the years to come. Congratulations to all on our success. It’s an honor for me to be a part of this Hallmark EAA Chapter 471.
Young Eagles Day
Young Eagles Day this year will be held on Saturday, June 14th, 2003 to correlate with EAA Nationals Young Eagles Day. This will be at the Abilene Regional Airport from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. We will need everyone’s help again to make this another great Young Eagles year. This is our last year our Young Eagles Day will be held but hopefully EAA will come up with a similar goal in the years to follow so we will continue to fly young people and introducing them to the wonderful world of aviation. We will meet our national goal of flying 1,000,000 Young Eagles by December 17th 2003. This is the date 100 years ago Orville and Wilbur Wright, with the help of Charles E. Taylor, made their first powered flight. Our Chapter 471 has played a vital role in this tremendous goal.
EAA Young Eagles Nears 900,000 Kids Flown
Volunteer EAA Young Eagles pilots gave 5,601 children airplane rides during the month of April, keeping the program squarely on target to provide the thrill of flight to 1 million kids ages 8-17 by December 17, 2003. April’s final count brought the year-to-date total to 18,640, or 19 percent ahead of last year’s record pace as we enter the prime flying season of spring, summer and fall. The total number of Young Eagles in the World’s Largest Logbook at the beginning of May 2003 was 895,037 representing the number of kids flown since the program’s inception in July 1992.

.In Training for Oshkosh
- Charlotte Rhodes
I don’t know about the rest of you folks going to Oshkosh, but I for one have started the endurance training. Sounds like a big thing, but I have a hard enough time now getting around for any length of time without my brace and medication and I can only imagine how I will fare for a week straight. However, I will be as ready as I can be by then.
I would like to spend most of my time checking out the airplanes, doing this and that, other than sitting around because I am too tired to move (I know I will probably do some of that anyway). I would like to encourage all that don’t walk for long periods of time now, to start a basic mile program at least three times a week and build on the distance if able. A brisk evening walk a few times around the block or down the road works.
We want everyone to come back as intact as they went. Feel free to rag on my concern at the next breakfast. See ya there.
