HANGAR FLYIN'
E
XPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION October 2002BIG COUNTRY CHAPTER # 471, INC.
President's Comments
- Gray Bridwell
I talked with Carroll Bird last night. He is doing well, eating a hamburger at his daughters in Georgetown during some recovery time. He walks about a half mile every day and will be back to his home in Buffalo Gap in about a week. He said he feels great!
If you have a plane, and you can read this, your name should be on the list to go to Airventure 2003! By the time you are reading this you will have just a little over nine months to wait. As many know, our local chapter 471 is planning to attend the event in mass. Plan now to go, as we need to get early camping reservations in.
July 29th August 4th are the official dates. Some of you will stay for only a few days while others will take in the full event. Please remember that this will be the 100th anniversary of powered flight. If you have never been, or have not been in years, THIS IS THE YEAR TO GO!
Chapter 471 will show a great video on October 19th 5:30 PM of Airventure 2002 at Grays house. Food and fix-ins will be provided. All interested parties wanting to go will sign up at that time.
We can then make reservations for parking together for a great aviation event. In talking with Bob Mackey at this years SWRFI, he will give us choice location if we call soon. Start planning to go now. Family, work, and other interests take time to plan around. Chapter 471 has more pride and better members than any other chapter. So set your sights and get ready for flights to OSHKOSH!
Cavanaugh Flight Museum
- Tim McMurray
Plans for the October trip to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum are being finalized. The plan now is to leave ABI around 10:00am Saturday October 26th for Addison airport. We will tour the museum from 1:00pm until 5:00pm then check into our hotel (hotel to be selected soon). That evening, we will dine at Lowerys Prime Rib Restaurant (of Lowerys seasoned salt fame).
If you are interested in making this trip, please contact Tim McMurray with the number in your party by Oct 21st so we can make tour, hotel and restaurant reservations. You can contact Tim at (915) 698-4921 or (915) 698-1807 (fax) or by email at tmc@bitstreet.com .
The Cavanaugh Flight Museum is a world class facility featuring WWI, WWII and general aviation aircraft. For more information on the flight museum check them out on the web at cavanaughflightmuseum.com .
Watch our chapter website for further trip details as they develop. This should be a fun trip for everyone whether you are flying or driving.

Basic Flying Rules
- Forwarded by Jack Duncan
1. Try to stay in the middle of the air.
2. Do not go near the edges of it.
3. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there.
Weather forecasts are horoscopes with numbers.
Airspeed, altitude or brains: Two are always needed to successfully complete
the flight.
A smooth landing is mostly luck. Two in a row is all luck. Three in a row is a prevarication.
I remember when sex was safe and flying was dangerous.
We have a perfect record in aviation. "We never left any one up there!"
If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it better be a helicopter.
Flashlights are tubular metal containers kept in a flight bag for the purpose of storing dead batteries.
Navy carrier pilots to Air Force pilots: "Flaring is like squatting to pee."
Flying the airplane is more important than radioing your plight to a person on
the ground incapable of understanding it.
What is the similarity between air traffic controllers and pilots?
If a pilot screw up, the pilot dies. If ATC screws up, the pilot dies.
If something hasn't broken on your helicopter, it is about to.
Notable Quotes
When a flight is proceeding incredibly well, something was forgotten.

Just remember, if you crash because of weather, your funeral will be held on a
sunny day

Never fly the 'A' model of anything.
- Ed Thompson
When a prang seems inevitable, endeavor to strike the softest, cheapest object in the vicinity, as slowly and gently as possible.
- Advice given to RAF pilots during W.W. II.
The Cub is the safest airplane in the world. It can just barely kill you.
- Attributed to Max Stanley, Northrop test pilot.
A pilot who doesn't have any fear probably isn't flying his plane to it's
maximum.
- Jon McBride, Astronaut
If you're faced with a forced landing, fly the thing as far into the crash as possible.

You've never been lost until you've been lost at Mach 3
